Humility - Future Grace

I was listening to a sermon by John Piper and he made a statement that struck me on the topic of humility.

"What matters is not that we do all we might have done or all we dreamed of doing, but that, while we live, we live by faith in future grace and walk in the path of love. The times are in God’s hands, not ours."

This is a challenge to be living each day as someone that is completely dependent on God and His grace. Potential and ideas do not show our dependence on God. Living each day by faith does.

What Heaven Will Not Be Like

In our doctrines class at church this last week we were talking about what heaven might possibly be like. This is a tough question to answer, but there are some theories that we can easily set aside (eternal golf, playing football in the front yard, etc...) Another poor theory was presented to me through a certain positive and encouraging radio station. I have been troubled by a song I heard recently by a popular (unnamed) Christian artist. The song talks about what God will say to you when you get to heaven, and this is the chorus:

Welcome home, you
I know you by name
How do you do?
I shine because of you today
So come and sit down
Tell me how you are
I know, son, it's good just to see your face

I get the whole Father/son connection that is going on here, but still come on, "I shine because of you"? That just doesn't sit well with me. Maybe this is nitpicky, but I just had to point it out.

Christless Christianity

Our small group is beginning a study on the topic of humility. As we began to discuss the topic it became obvious that humility is not something that is distinctly "Christian". That is, many people who give no attention to Christ will also see the value of being humble. Therefore, it is very important that we discuss the topic of humility (or any other moral topic) through the lens of the gospel. The gospel must be at the foundation of our humility, because the gospel must be at the foundation of all that we do as those who are in Christ. If our actions have changed after conversion, but they have changed only in the sense that they attain to a higher moral standard, then is it really Christian?

People make decisions everyday to better themselves, yet these decisions do not amount to righteousness. If we are in Christ, then our movement toward humility must be driven by the gospel, and it must be a result of our union with Christ. If Christ is not at the core of our humility, then is our humility really Christian? Notice the words of Paul pertaining to the results of our union with Christ, "But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God". 1 Corinthians 6:11 (ESV)

This quote from Spurgeon was very challenging in this area. It is kind of long, but worth it. "People go to their place of worship and sit down comfortably, and think they must be Christians, when all the time all that their religion consists in, is listening to an orator, having their ears tickled with music, and perhaps their eyes amused with graceful action and fashionable manners; the whole being no better than what they hear and see at the opera - not so good, perhaps, in point of aesthetic beauty, and not an atom more spiritual. Thousands are congratulating themselves, and even blessing God that they are devout worshippers, when at the same time they are living in an unregenerate Christless state, having the form of godliness, but denying the power thereof." - C.H. Spurgeon, Lectures to my Students p. 11.

Maybe the Season is Not Quite Dead

Here is Brian Dawkins pulling down an interception against Eli Manning and the Giants. The Eagles overcame some very questionable officiating to defeat the Giants 36-22, and take control in the Wild Card race. As a true Philly fan I am anything but confident or optimistic, but there is a little glimmer of hope. We will see what happens Christmas night in Dallas.

Spurgeon on the Power of the Gospel

In our church doctrines class we have been talking about the illuminating work of the Holy Spirit in reference to Scripture. Illumination is simply the difference between a believer and an unbeliever. I then came across this section in Spurgeon's autobiography where he describes this phenomenon in his conversion experience.

"I confess to have been tutored in piety, put into my cradle by prayerful hands, and lulled to sleep by songs concerning Jesus, but after having heard the gospel continually, with line upon line, precept upon precept, here much and there much, yet, when the Word of the Lord came to me with power, it was as new as if I had lived among the unvisited tribes of Central Africa, and had never heard the tidings of the cleansing fountain filled with blood, drawn from the Saviour's veins.
When, for the first time, I received the gospel to my soul's salvation, I thought that I had never really heard it before, and I began to think that the preachers to whom I had listened had not truly preached it." ( C.H. Spurgeon Autobiography Volume 1 pgs. 84-85.)

The illumination of the Holy Spirit is a blessed authenticator of our faith as it takes simple words of the gospel and gives them the power to bring us to life.

Sofia's Surgery

Sofia's surgery went well today. Here are some pictures from the experience.

Here is the hospital, CHKD.

Sofia got her cool pre-surgery pajamas.

The doctor came a wrote on her face to show what needed to be done.

Sofia was kinda tired after the surgery.

According to the doctor everything went well. Her eyes will need about 2 weeks to recover.
We are thankful, all in all it was a very smooth day. Sofia was very brave. Thank you for the prayers.

The Bad Thing About Christmas Decorations...

The Bad thing about Christmas decorations is that sometimes they are metal and fall on your face, resulting in a cut that requires 3 stitches to close. At least that is what Sofia thinks is the bad part about Christmas decorations.
Sofia will also be having surgery on the same eye this Friday to help prevent her eye from crossing. Please pray for her.
